Daycare blues

So Atti's primary daycare worker for the last few years (and 2IC in the small daycare he goes to) has left. No warning or explanation. Which is par for the course actually. Atti adored her and I really loved her too - as did most of the parents and kids.

Lucky for me, she and I became friendly enough over the last few years that I actually have her phone number, so I have managed to ensure that we will still be able to see her sometimes. Not quite sure what happened (as both of us are too sensible to discuss it - she will breach her contract's confidentiality) but I feel like it was some decisions by the chain that took our little daycare over a few years ago was behind it.

She has asked me for a reference as she is applying to another local daycare, a new, top of the line purpose built one, and while I am happy to give her a reference, I am also wondering if I should move him to the new daycare. They have places available...

It would definitely be more expensive, and my current one isn't cheap. And I've just lost all my funding, so it would cost us quite a bit. And he has friends at his daycare, he's been there most of his life and I don't like to destabilise things in his life unless I really have to. We can walk or ride to his daycare - it's not around the corner, but it's not a walk that is beyond him either. The new one is not that much further away, but it would be far enough that I'm not sure I'd be walking much.

But he does love this woman, and so do I. I know he would make new friends, and especially if I chose to utilise their kind program rather than put him in the local public school kindy program, he would have time to get the same kind of stability at this new one. The new one is very art focused, which is cool, but to be honest he is such a physical kid that I wonder about that - my current daycare is cool with the kids being quite physical - they climb frames and jump down, ride bikes like mad, play running races, all that kind of stuff - I wonder if that would be ok in this new place.

Eh, I'm probably just daydreaming. I might go an have a look at it though.

In other news - the plague, the plague! Everyone but me has collapse into illness tonight. Atti had a very short and late nap today, and woke up teary and clingy and sookie to the point of me putting him in the ergo, strapped to my front for an hour late this afternoon. And he fairly suddenly developed a chesty wheezy cough tonight and was a bit of a mess. Actually, still is every hour or two - not getting much sleep tonight, am I? The Wook came home with gastro. Which is so much delayed after everyone else had it, that I fear this is a different strain, and I will get it again. Meh.

Didn't get much sleep last night either - the Wook dressed Atti in totally the wrong pjs (not warm enough) so he woke up cold about 10pm and came and go into bed with us. And so then there were two of them tossing, sighing, moaning, and Atti was seriously having long conversations in his sleep. And now and again he'd wake up and be chatty with me (go the hell to sleep son). And climbing all over me, and hot. Meh.

notes

so right at this moment Atti and his friend A are playing cars and Atti is telling him that their cars can 'take short-cuts'. Where do they learn this stuff?

Bit of a drama at daycare today. Apparently Atti was teasing a boy, who got very upset, and he was talked to. Then he found another way to tease, and basically be mean to another child, and they talked to him again. At they end they said, are you going to stop being mean now and he said "No, I live being mean, it's fun".

Yikes.

So then, something to work on for the long weekend. Ay ay ay.

Hilariously I offered to pick A up today as his mum is a bit sick, and he has spent the afternoon teasing Atti, who is NOT LIKING IT. AT ALL! So that it a bit useful in terms of talking about how no one likes a mean kid, and if he is mean and teasing, no one will want to play with him. We have a bit of straight up 'other side of the fence' happening. Thanks A! (that is a dead weird thing to thank a kid for, no? Being mean to my kid at a handy interval. There is something wrong there Gigglz).

And when we were picking up some sausages for dinner at the shops Atti reminded me that we were out of cereal and I needed to get some more! Awesome - he is already starting to be useful! I love that!

me so angry

Today is one of those days you just have to push through I guess. Without snapping and killing anyone I mean.

I had offered to take a friend's son to the performance that our son's circus school was putting on today. When I offered I did say that I could switch cars with my neighbour and take their 2 year old daughter too, but that I didn't think she would come with me, and they agreed. So I kind of forgot I offered.

But this morning they rang asking if I could take her too - she wanted to go and they were feeling unwell and so I said yes. Bit of re-organisation and I figured what the hell, there would be four adults to look after three kids.

Ho ho ho. As if the day would go that smoothly.

First part went mostly ok. The Out-laws showed up and got a big table in the cafe. Atti wanted to show the other kids the train station so we went for a walk down there. Came back, got all the kids seated and ordered some drinks and a muffin. Our friend's kids are incredibly picky eaters, so I didn't expect them to eat much. A few bites, about 10 minutes of sitting and they were all done. So I took them out to the playground and there was a table open next to the play area.

This is where things went wonky. I asked the Wook and the Outlaws to move out to the table. This was apparently the equivalent to asking them to get ebola. Nope, no chance no. In fact, they were of the opinion I should drag all the kids back to the table and make them eat. I was like, um no. That would be crazy. We will get them some sausages when the show is over.

And just like that it was a disaster. Look, I was being an utterly stroppy cow - I was fairly stressed dealing with three kids and the other adults were being more painful than helpful. I had a mountain of bags and we were bumping everyone pretty much repeatedly. So I probably did take it out on the Wook. But seriously, man up and take a hit for the team occasionally, you know?

They left me there. With three kids, 4, 3 and 2, to use public transport to get home, to cope with a hugely crowded show, and no spare adult to wait in line for food or refill drinks or take one kid off of the loo. It was, really hard. And I had none of the stuff I would have if I had intended to take kids by myself, pram, prepared food, a car with three carseats etc.

And now he is acting like it is all fine. Like nothing happened. So the plan for the afternoon is to NOT stab him, and to keep it together until I can return the kids to my lovely if hungover friends. without ringing everyone I know and telling them what happened and starting divorce proceedings.

And there is no chocolate left.

le sigh.

Interesting

3.5 has been a bit rough. I had been told, and seen with friend's kids that it is kinda peak arse-holery (at least until teenage years) - although I have also been told that this is true for boys, girls threenage year is 4.

But it is also getting interesting. Today we went to the pool for Atti's swimming lesson and we meet up with some friends after for a pool playdate. Then we have a snack and head out to the park before heading home for nap time. Atti (and all kids who ever come into his orbit) particularly likes one of the dads in our parents group, and he and his son come to the pool most weeks.

Today as we were walking from the park across the carpark to head home, Atti said that it had been 'so nice' seeing his friend J today. And then he said 'I wish I could be J and J could be Atticus'. I was a bit startled and asked 'why is that' (thinking that the answer would be about his Dad, to be honest) and, since he is three and is crap at answering 'why' questions, he said 'because I love J so much'.

And then, as we got to our car he said 'I'm back to being Atticus now'. And didn't talk about them again on the way home.

Hilarious, but also pretty interesting. Being another person instead of yourself? That's a kind of cool thought experiment son.

But, for the love of my sanity, please stop fighting with your father about EVERYTHING.
